My story empowers members to change their lives
There are many areas in my life where Curves has helped me. For example, my health and fitness has improved … my confidence … my career … I could go on. But the area in my life where Curves has helped me the most would definitely be my mental health and recovery after the 2011 Townsville tornado. I was overweight after having my children but after the tornado ripped through my suburb, tearing apart my home with my toddler and I inside, my mental health deteriorated. We lost our home and everything in it that day. As I set about rebuilding my life, I stopped looking after myself. I began suffering post traumatic stress and depression crept in. I also put on a lot of weight as I was too scared to leave my house. That’s when I began my Curves journey. I looked at myself in the mirror one day at 105 kilos. I hadn’t showered or brushed my hair in days. I was too scared to go outside in case there was wind or rain. I thought “Lindy, you can’t take care of your kids if you can’t take care of yourself.” That was my turning point. I haven’t looked back. It didn’t take long until I realised that working out made me feel better than antidepressants. The weight loss has just been an extra bonus.
Members often tell me that I’m an inspiration to women around me. They say I’m strong, brave and inspirational. To be honest, I’m a regular everyday woman who did what it took to take care of my boys. I love sharing my story with my members to empower and show them that it is very possible to change your life. I know it is because I rebuilt my life from scratch after a tornado ruined it and with Curves I rebuilt it stronger than before!
I help women change their lives. I’m a Curves Coach, so I encourage women to set goals and work hard to achieve and maintain those goals. I encourage them to make smart, healthy choices and I do all I can to empower every member to be the very best that she can. I am grateful to work in an environment where the staff encourage one another daily. We all do Curves Nutrition Program and meet with each other for weekly one on one coaching. We come along to each other’s Body Basics Classes and regularly work out together. Often we even arrive to work out together so that our members see us as a united team who plan our workouts in advance. Also, we have a great little team rule “When preparing your Curves Protein Shake after Body Basics, always make one for the staff on shift too.”
