Caths Curves Nutrition Program Journey to Heart Health
“THANK YOU TO THE TEAM AT CURVES ASHBURTON, MY HEALTH IS MUCH BETTER DUE TO YOUR CARE AND SUPPORT.”
In early December 2012 I completed the 90 day Curves Nutrition Program, lighter in weight, knowing how to make much better food choices and very pleased with myself.
Why did I do Curves Nutrition Program, well two words sum it up: Heart Health. Let me explain.
In January 2012, totally out of the blue I had a heart attack which required three stents being inserted into my heart via my wrist, in Christchurch Hospital. When I look back now I know that my body had not been running well for some time.
I had not considered while a bit over weight and not quite as fit as I could be, that I would have a heart attack without warning. I thought I would have had intense pain and feel really sick but this was not the case. Although I had had quite high blood pressure, my GP was not over worried about it and I had only in the previous couple of months before the big event, started taking a very small dosage of medication after much discussion.
After I had recovered from my heart attack, I completed a six week, 3 hours each week, Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at the Ashburton Hospital, as recommended by the Cardiac Team, which was excellent, learning about good heart health practices. Also involved was a fitness programme tailored to each person's level of fitness. Once again my fitness improved greatly over that short period of time.
But it was not long until I felt that there were still ways I could improve my health and well being even more. After chatting to the girls at Curves and a very direct conversation with Viv, I paid my money and accepted the challenge to do Curves Nutrition Program.
I was determined that I would lose at least five kgs, but I am pleased to say I achieved that plus more. I ate food that I would never had eaten before and even enjoyed it - shows it was more mind over matter. I found ways to increase my steps, walk the long way instead of the quickest way. I had always enjoyed walking but now I was on a mission, it was a challenge and it was fun. The biggest thing I found was that I formed much better habits with what I ate. Gone were the two or three muffins or cake each day. I had found that after the heart attack I had started to drink a lot more water but still had fizz most days, even only a glass full but now found it was too sweet and not nice.
The computer coaching was brilliant, I learnt so much about food, choices, exercise and the total package must include all three. When I had finished my 90 days, it was hard to believe how quick the time had gone and yes it was great, good habits, less weight and wow I had achieved big time.
What can I say about the team at Curves, especially Lois and Viv, (Maria and Karen were away in recovery mode most of the time I was doing the programme) a huge 'thank you' doesn't seem enough but I know that they are aware how pleased I am with myself and the wonderful support they gave me. Also talking to other gym members who have completed the Curves Nutrition Program is such a buzz, to see and hear what others have achieved, it makes you want to continue to make better life choices, gain and give encouragement, the team effect.
I can say my health is now so much better it is hard to believe compared to this time last year. I intend to continue with the very good life skills, good food habits and the fitness I have gained over the past twelve months. Life is precious and we all need to make the most of it. The skills I learnt in this programme have become a way of life, apart from a little slip up every now and then, but it is then back to basics and away we go again.
