Dinah Buchanan – Curves Story

Why did you join CURVES and what gave you the final push?

I’ve tried several times over the past few years to lose weight but just couldn’t do it on my own. I knew this time I needed some help and I remembered seeing the Curves ads on TV – I checked out my nearest one and it happened to be Erina – so close! The final push came for me when I turned 60 in December last year. I’ve been watching my parents’ health really deteriorate over the years and knew I didn’t want to end up in the same boat. I had already been diagnosed with diabetes 2 and on medication so this was a big factor. I also wanted to be able to fit into some of my ‘small’ clothes at the back of my wardrobe! I’ve always been quite slim and just stacked on the kilos over the past 10 years with increasing family & professional stress.

How has CURVES changed your life for the better?

With the help of Curves Complete I’ve lost 11kgs and feel amazing! I feel stronger and more flexible and have heaps more energy. I’ve gone down a couple of dress sizes at least and getting ready to replace my wardrobe! I’ve still got some more to lose but feel confident that I’ll reach my goals. I’m also off my diabetic medication and no longer have raised blood glucose levels so feel really delighted by that improvement. Have also had other medication reduced so feel like I’m definitely reaching my health goals (my GP is very happy). I’ve been able to cut out tea & coffee and the biggest of all – no sugar (never been able to do that before). My whole palate has changed – fruit tastes sweeter and I can really taste and enjoy food things so much better. I feel like I’m getting my body & my life back and I feel so grateful.

What do you like most about CURVES?

I think the support and encouragement is what makes the whole CURVES experience unique for me. I’ve been to other gyms before but never felt so welcome or encouraged. I’ve been coming to CURVES for 3 months now and starting to feel like I belong and I’m loving it. Thanks to all the trainers at CURVES for providing such a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere for us all.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

I’m grateful to CURVES for providing the help, encouragement and structure that I’ve needed to reach my goals. Fiona’s encouragement and support each week has helped me stay committed and locked into my goals, and I’m so amazed at how the kilos have just dropped off. I’m usually hanging out to get to the gym every afternoon and enjoy it heaps – and loving getting my body moving again. Love the CURVES diet! I’ve felt satisfied, full and pleasantly surprised at the variety and quality – love the recipes – easy to prepare and execute. I’ve changed my whole approach to food and have finally realised it’s not cutting down on quantity that loses weight – it’s quality & variety.

All the trainers at CURVES ERINA: Take a pat on the back for all your hard work and commitment to the CURVES experience!

I have been a member of Curves Erina for almost 6 years now and have been coming regularly throughout this time. I am normally very healthy and never go to the doctors so when I started feeling very unwell in early December 2016, it came as quite a shock.

I started having pains in my chest going through to my back but after chest and heart tests gave normal results, the pain then started in my abdomen and lower back – we started looking at gastric reflux and related conditions. Throughout this time my blood test levels were fluctuating from high to extreme.

After more tests including a 6 week wait for a colonoscopy/endoscopy which also gave normal results, I was sent for a CT scan which revealed widespread and enlarged lymph nodes in my chest and abdomen. Further testing including numerous blood tests, a biopsy and bone marrow biopsy, confirmed I had non hodgkins lymphoma. There are over 30 different types of this lymphoma and while this was a huge shock, there was also tremendous relief in finally knowing the cause of my illness after 3 months of quite rigorous testing.

I finally began my journey to regaining my health and have been undergoing chemo and targeted therapy for lymphoma since late April 2017.

I have found that throughout the course of my illness and treatment that the days I have stayed at home and done little, I have felt worse than those when I have gone out and done, to the best I can, my regular activities.

I continue with my “hit and giggle “(tennis), ten pin bowling and of course my Curves workouts each week.

My haematologist has said that one of the reasons for me coping so well with my treatment and particularly the fact that my white blood cell count has remained relatively stable, is because I have been continuing with my regular activities.

At the moment I cannot always manage to do 2 complete circuits but always do plenty of stretching. Continuing my Curves workouts has helped me physically and mentally cope with the stress of undergoing my ongoing treatment.

I have found all the staff and fellow members of Curves Erina, to be very supportive, full of empathy and always full of encouragement. Everyone is always telling me how good I look which is particularly encouraging when I am feeling lousy. I have also become closer to many other club members, many of whom have opened up about their own personal issues. It’s true that we often don’t really know what goes on in others’ lives but when they see me in my turbans and scarfs, and they see that not all is right in my life, it enables them to also share their own matters. I feel very privileged to be part of this and quite honoured and humble that I can help them start that conversation. A problem shared is often a problem halved.

I have learnt from my illness the need to look after myself more. I am now having regular massages for my hands and feet to assist with numbness and tingling. I am also spending more time looking after my nails and regular bicarb mouthwashes to take care of my mouth and teeth, all of which are affected by chemotherapy.
